The ecotourism or also known ecological tourism is developing in different provinces in Panama. One of these is Veraguas provinces with the Coiba National Park. One of the most precious haven of Panama's Coiba Island, declared a World Heritage Site and protected by law in Panama. Therefore, the best activity to develop and not damage the habitat is through ecotourism. Camino de Cruces National Park was established en December 30, it is 10,806 acres en size (4,373 hectares) and runs parallel to the Panama Canal waterway. The area where this Park is located has always been important as a transit route, because it has served as a passageway for wildlife species between North and South America since the formation of the Panamanian isthmus. Spaniards, on the other hand, bécame aware of the strategic significance of having a route through the isthmus to trade merchandise and treasures between the Pacific coast of the continent and Europe. They established a road which become to be known as the Camino de Cruces (Crosses Road), which runs through the Park area today. With the passing of time, a new peak period for this road began, being now the trasportation of gold from California to the American Atlantic coast and to Europe. The Panama Canal replaced Camino de Cruces as a merchandise trade route. Presently, it completes the natural corridor that protects the Eastern border of the Panama Canal and contributes, in this manner, to its long term operation.
